Free Love

“… freely ye have received, freely give.” Matt 10:8

The term “free love” has a lot of meanings in our world. Today free love can refer to the sexual revolution and experimentation of the 1960s and 70s, or to the earlier 19th century social movement focused on freeing romance, marriage, sexuality, and birth control from government and church interference.

But both of these uses of the term are a far cry from the love freely given to us by God. It’s time we reclaimed the term and brought it out from the depths it has sunk into, and raise it to its rightful place.

There are four facts about God that give us a clear picture of what He is. 1 John 4:8 explain that God is love. Several Bible writers describe God as an infolding, consuming fire. God is spirit, St.John 4:24 explains. Paul connects spirit and fire, explaining that God made angels [to be] spirits, his ministers [to be] flames of fire (Heb. 1:7 brackets mine). We also know God is immortal (1 Tim. 6:16). In my imagination love is the substance of God, not just a description. If all these are true, and why wouldn’t they be, love is a consuming, electrifying fire. To summarize, God is love, a fire, a spirit, and can’t die. Imagine it with me. Putting it all together, God is an infinite, intelligent, intentional, benevolent ball of love energy, a love so strong it burns like a fire that regenerates itself and never fails or runs out. Whoa. Let that sink in. Now imagine that the fireball turns to look at you. Did you just get chills, like I did?
