Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer [allow] my faithfulness to fail. Psalm 89:33 KJV
This is God’s promise for David and his children, because David loved and glorified God so much, God would love and prosper his children for generations after Him. Even if future descendants disobeyed or dishonored God, He wouldn’t completely remove His love and kindness, nor stop being faithful.
This is a profound thought by itself, but what strikes me most here is the thought that God will not allow his faithfulness to fail. Several other versions say He will not betray his faithfulness, or He will not let his truth become a lie. It suggests the possibility that it could become spoiled if He let it alone, that even His faithfulness needs close attention, constant care and continued effort to succeed. And He is willing, able, and insistent to do this. He is faithful to His faithfulness towards us.
There is a lot of peace in that thought. His love doesn’t stop even if ours does. His promise will not fail even if we do. Whatever blessing He has promised us will come to pass. Trust Him.
God, your lovingkindness endures forever. Thank you for your promise to Abraham, to David, to Christ. Let your promises to them be fulfilled in us. In Jesus name, Amen.
